3.5) Cellular Automata

"Cellular Automata (CA) are discrete dynamical systems that model complex behaviour based on simple, local rules animated on a lattice".

Examples:

  • Conway's Game of Life (Berlekamp et al. 1982) (a cell can only survive it there are either two or three other living cells in its immediate neighbourhood)
  • Segregation/Migration (Schelling, 1971) (Schelling supposed that people had a 'threshold of tolerance' of other ethnic groups)
  • Literature: Hegselmann R. (1996) Wolfram S. (1986, 2002)
