Integrated software platforms (NetLogo, AnyLogic might have some similarities but is closer to Repast and is a commercial software)

  • Easy to use for beginners (good for courses)
  • Provides many ABM things
  • Powerful concepts (patches, turtles, ask)
  • You can probably do (almost) anything you want, but that might sometimes require work-arounds
  • Very easy to share code
  • Very good documentation
  • User community
  • Maintained by active group (Northwestern University)
  • Look and feel of video games
  • Teaching software
  • Model library gives an incomplete idea of NetLogo
  • Increasingly used for ‘serious science’

These are the reasons why this introductory course uses Netlogo for ABM. This allows the student to reach a much higher level in a shorter time, being actually able to design, implement and analyse a simple ABM within a couple of hours.
