1.3) Getting Started


Scientists focus on the underlying system that has a modular design. The "Unix OS provides a set of simple tools that each perform a limited, well-defined function". To get you operating as a scientist in a Unix environment, you need to learn a number of these modules or commands.

The way to access the heart of Unix is through the command line. We will show you how to access this command line now. The actions I want you to take are (see the video on the previous page for an example):

  1. Use your mouse to put the cursor on the background (you may have to close or minimize windows to see the background)
  2. Right click on the background and a menu will appear and select console (on some Linux systems it may be called ‘window’ or ‘X-Term’, terminal, or similar).
