17.2) Putty

Many scientists will run MS Windows at home and they will want to connect to their Unix computer at their university. This time, we will be in an Ms Windows environment and we will use a freely downloadable program called putty (always run a virus checker on the file before using it). The video shows how to use it.

This video shows you how to connect a MS Windows PC to a Unix computer at your university so that you can do research from home.

If you are interested in transferring files between computers then between two Unix computers use the scp command or from a MS Windows PC to a Unix computer then use WinSCP. WinSCP is freely available from a web search but ensure the site is authorised by your system administrator before you install it.
